SAFE joins Fair Cobalt Alliance

Artisanal and Small Scale Mining (ASM) contributes up to 30% of the total cobalt produced in the DRC and deserves to be recognised as a legitimate source of cobalt production. The upliftment of the ASM miners and their families is key not only as world cobalt demand increases but more importantly for the benefit of the local population of the DRC at the source of production.

The FCA and its members are working to ensure that the ASM industry is treated fairly through professional mine site management and ensuring that responsible sourcing of minerals is practiced. SAFE is committed to supporting the goals of the FCA to make mines safer, reduce negative environmental impacts and create better working conditions for miners by contributing SAFE expertise to ensure the most robust and effective supply chain processes and technologies are applied.

Costa Caldis, COO of SAFE commented,

“SAFE has made its 150+ years of combined experience and expertise fully available as a resource to the FCA and we and look forward to the positive impact we can have for the ASM cobalt industry in the DRC.”
